Cone zones = no go zones: Tips for safely navigating campus construction sites

As you head back to campus for a new semester, some areas might look a little different from when you left them. Roads, sidewalks and buildings are getting some TLC, which means a few detours on your fastest route to class. We know you’ve got places to be (and maybe only a few minutes to get there), but a little caution goes a long way towards keeping everyone safe.

Here are some quick campus construction safety tips:

  • Follow signage for safe routes
Signs are carefully placed to guide you around construction areas quickly and safely.
  • Don’t move or cross barriers
Barriers mark the edges of work zones and protect both you and workers from unexpected dangers.
  • Stay out of restricted areas
Even if a restricted area looks clear, it can contain hidden risks such as heavy machinery and unstable surfaces.
  • Watch for unexpected hazards
Construction areas can change quickly, with new obstacles, debris, or equipment appearing at any time.
  • Give workers room to do their job
Workers need space to safely operate equipment and complete projects efficiently. This keeps everyone on campus safer.

Thanks for helping keep campus safe! Your awareness helps everyone get where they need to go and keeps construction projects moving.
