Rebecca Moritz (FP&M Environment, Health & Safety) has been appointed to the position of Responsible Official (RO) for the University’s select agent program. She replaces Tim Yoshino, who recently retired. Her appointment is effective as of June 29, 2018.
Rebecca will report directly to Paul Umbeck, Director of FP&M Environment, Health & Safety. She will also have reporting responsibilities to Cynthia Czajkowski, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research for Biological Sciences in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE).
Rebecca brings more than 15 years of experience in research and administrative experience to this role. She has served as an Alternate Responsible Official and select agent program manager for more than seven years. During this time, Rebecca has worked to ensure that the select agent program supports the research mission of the University and is in full compliance with the federal regulatory framework for highly infectious materials. She will continue to work closely with the NIH Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, and UW principal investigators to interpret regulations and educate staff to ensure compliance and protection of the health and safety of faculty, staff, and students.
Rebecca holds a BS in Bacteriology and a MS in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also a Certified Biological Safety Professional through the American Biological Safety Association and a Specialist Microbiologist with the National Registry of Certified Microbiologists through the American Society for Microbiology.
